Chapter 26
Ivy
Scout bounced his knee against mine. “You were telling me about a hug.”
“Yes. Your grandma hugged me.”
“Well, that certainly takes the spark out of our discussion.”
“I know. It was weird. And so magical.”
He shot me a sideways smirk. “Now you’re just making things up.”
“No, listen. She hugged me because, well, never mind why, but it was a special hug. And it got me to thinking.”
“About…?”
“A hug has powers. I did not know that until today.”
His cheeks flashed red. “Duh. I have hugged you enough to know your hugs have special powers.”
I elbowed him. “Stop. I’m being serious.”
“All right. What do you mean?”
I stared at two ants as they traveled across the ground in front of us. I avoided smashing them when I set the swing in motion. “I was completely shocked to realize today that I’ve never really been hugged.”
Scout stretched his arm across the back of the swing. “Not to go back to our kind of hugs or anything, but I can assure you, the way I feel when I hug you… There’s nothing more powerful than…”
I touched his leg. “Please, Scout, I promise this is not about us. I know how we are together. Your affection for me and your complete and total dedication to my happiness is not in question here. Do you understand?”
“Yes. I think.”
“I’m talking about when other people hug me. Like people I don’t know too well, or people I don’t know at all.” I struggled to find the words for what I meant. “When your grandma hugged me today it was like we connected. Something passed between us. I know my mother loves me. She hugs me, but I never felt the comfort when my mom hugged me like I did when your grandma hugged me.”
“And that makes you feel bad.”
“Yes! Shouldn’t my own mother’s hugs be the best kind?”
Scout met my gaze and brushed the pad of his thumb across my cheek. “Not if her hugs only take from you and not give you anything in return.”
“What does that mean?”
“You’re an empath, Ivy. You’re an emotional healer. Whatever’s inside you finds whatever’s inside other hurting people. When you physically connect with them, you give them something they need.”
It sunk in. “And if I need something, the right person can give it to me.”
“Exactly.”
I paused the swing with my toe. “My mother loves me, but she can’t give me anything. She’s been sick her whole life so she can’t help me. She can only take what she needs from me.”
“That’s probably true. She can’t help it. She survives from your energy and the way you actively help take care of her.”
“No wonder I’m so tired all the time.”
A laugh rumbled in his chest when I rested my head on it. “No wonder at all.”
“And you know my Aunt Connie isn’t the warm and fuzzy kind.”
“Right.”
“And my dad… I missed all the dad hugs. He’s like me, you know? With the abilities? I bet if he’d been around his hugs would have helped me, and maybe he wouldn’t have gotten himself in trouble if he’d stayed with my mom.
